Open Day K&M Yachtbuilders in Makkum, April 20th 2015

On April 25th 2015, K&M Yachtbuilders in Makkum organize an open day. During the day you can visit several yachts built by K&M and there are two presentations at 12.00 and 14.00hr. Jeremy Wyatt of The World Cruising Club will give a presentation about the beauty of sailing in Scotland, as part of the Malt Cruise, which they organise in addition to more famous events such as the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC). Wouter Verbraak, sailor and Navigator in the Volvo Ocean Race will speak about his experiences on board, team spirit, his plans for the future and how he became a professional sailor.

Unfortunately the Axonite 77 is in Italy and the Icon 48 is racing in the south of the Netherlands, so they can’t be visited during the open day. But the open day will give you a good view of the craftsmanship of this yard and you can get information about the Axonite yachts and the Icon.

During our visit to China last week, we completed some orders for a 48ft aluminium sailing yacht, in Shanghai we saw the new T-yacht 950, we did a presentation in the yacht club about how to choose a sailing yacht and we got an order for a refit for a 37ft sailing yacht in Hangzhou.
The order for the aluminium yacht was in the north of china and the yard allready started the building of a composite Icon 48, also designed by us. The yard builded a lot of motoryachts in the past and is expanding their facilities and workers.
In Shanghai the building frame, including the frames were set up. The prototype will be build in carbon fibre and the interior will be modern with wooden accents. The owner of this company organized an evening in the sailing club in the cool docks and I was invited to tell something about the principle of a sailing yacht.
At least we set up a new cooperation with a boatyard and the first order was a refit of their own 37ft yacht.

The goal is to start with a few prototypes and after that to start a serial production. At the moment the yard is building a range of motoryachts with a length of 35 till 125ft.

Last week, the first trials are made with the Icon 48 (design 143). The wheather was stabil and the windspeed was between 12 and 16 knots. The course was a few hours upwind and a few hours downwind, without a gennaker. Upwind, the speed was between 8.5 and 9.0 knots. For the first trial and the few waterdepth on that part of the IJsselmeer, we were very satisfied about the speed and the behaviour of the Icon.
